It is important to keep your Green Card current and renew it when necessary. Green Card holders with an expired Green Card may be denied entry into the United States and even be charged a misdemeanor.

How do I find out if my Green Card is expired?
United States Permanent Resident Cards, commonly knows as Green Cards, may have an expiration date printed on front of the card. Permanent residents (Green Card holders) who were issued a Green Card valid for ten years, should submit a Green Card Renewal application if the Green Card is already expired or will expire within 6 months.

Download the Green Card Renewal application online and complete the required forms. You must also pay a filing fee and submit proof of identity and that you are United States permanent resident.

My Green Card is not expired, but it was lost or stolen. How do I get a new Green Card?
Having your Green Card lost, stolen or accidentally damaged is a serious issue. All green card holders not in possession of a valid Green Card should file a Green Card Replacement application immediately.

Is the process different for lost or stolen Green Cards?
There is a fundamental difference between renewing a Green Card, replacing a lost or stolen Green Card, and removing the 2-year conditional residence (which only applies to Green Cards obtained by marriage or investment). I've recently got married and taken on my husband's last name. How do I update the name on my Green Card or correct wrong information on my Green Card?
This is a very common procedure, however, it does require the applicant to file an application with the USCIS. The completed Green Card replacement application should be submitted with the supporting documents, such as a marriage certificate. Are there any legal implications if I don't renew or replace my Green Card?
Section 264 of the Immigration and Nationality Act states that: "Every alien, eighteen years of age and over, shall at all times carry with him and have in his personal possession any certificate of alien registration or alien registration receipt card issued to him. Any alien who fails to comply with [these] provisions shall be guilty of a misdemeanor."

How long can I stay outside the United States with a Green Card?
Green Card holders are entitled to travel outside the United States whenever they wish. However, there are limitations on how long a Green Card holder can stay outside the United States.
